The Junior A hurlers kicked off their Championship campaign when they were defeated by St. Josephs, Doora/Barefield in the first match of the competition on Saturday, July 26th in Ballyea........
Pre-match favourites, St. Josephs set about their task with a flurry of scores from the off. The Clooney/Quin lads were clearly unsettled early-on as they trailed 8 points to 1 after 18 minutes. From here to half-time though, the Clooney lads took the game to their neighbours and hit a goal and 3 without reply as half-time approached.
At the break, the score was 10 points to 1-5, as the understrength Clooney lads got right back in the game.
The second half was a tight affair, with little between the sides, as scores were exchanged in a high-scoring game.
However, down the stretch, the Josephs lads pulled away, the final scoreline of 0-19 to 1-9 flattered St. Josephs.
It was a brave performance from the Clooney/Quin outfit, who were deprived of several of the team that captured the Junior B Championship title last Autumn. It is hoped that for Round 2 some of the injuries will be cleared up, with a stronger Panel to choose from.
