Visitors Sixmilebridge took home the points following the Clare Cup clash in Clooney this Saturday evening, July5th...........
Clooney played with the aid of a light wind in the first half, but Sixmilebridge were much the sharper in the first half, easing into a 3 to 1 lead by the 7th minute, the Clooney score coming from Cathal Egan. Brian Shally reduced the lead to one with a free following a foul on Pa Reynolds as he surged forward from defence. Two Danny Morey points in the 10th and 14 minutes put 3 between the sides, with Padraig Ward replying from play in the 16th minute.
This was followed by a powerful surge from The Bridge, with points from Jonathan Downes, John Reddan and two from Caimin Morey, one from a free to push them 6 ahead by the 27th minute. Credit the Clooney lads who responded positively with scores from a Shally free, a brace of points from Egan and an excellent effort from Cathal Hannon out on the sideline to cut the defecit to 2 but Rory Shanahan completed the first half scoring with a point to leave the score at halftime reading Sixmilebridge 10 to Clooneys 7.
The home side were looking for a fast start to the 2nd half, but it was Caimin Morey who hit three frees in the 1st, 5th and 6th minutes to put 6 between the sides. A Shally free in the 7th minute was answered a minute later by Morey. Clooney were now up against it, with the breeze now gaining in strength. Once again, the home side dug in, and, following a series of substitutions and switches, they began to take control of affairs.
Two Mike McNamara points, and one each from Adrian Fleming and Egan again by the 23rd minute had the Clooney lads within 2 pts, with Sixmilebridge now in trouble in a number of key positions.
The home supporters were now spurring on their team, but in the next 4 minutes, two goal opportunities to push the home side ahead weren't converted. The first opportunity fell to Cathal Hannon who fielded a long delivery and got through on the Bridge goal. However, as he was about to strike, the ball was brilliantly knocked to safety by Michael Liddane from behind.
Moments later, a high Cathal Egan delivery was fielded on the end line by Derek Ryan, who tried to link-up with the on-rushing Mike Mac, but Tommy Morey got back to snatch the sliothar from the Clooney midfielders grasp. Sixmilebridge responded to the danger in fine fashion, and three Morey points, two frees, and an Adrian Chaplin score in injury time sealed the victory for Sixmilebridge, though a six point margain was harsh on the home side.
