The Senior hurlers of Clooney/Quin and Wolfe Tones played out an exciting draw in todays(Sunday Oct 26th) Senior "B" Hurling Final played in Clarecastle. The game ebbed and flowed, with both sides taking commanding leads, only for their opponents to reel in the defecit on each occasion......................
The lead was swapped several times early in the 1st half, but the Clooney lads took command by the mid-point of the half, and leading by 9 pts to 5 at the half-time break.
On the resumption, Mike McNamara added a point in the 2nd minute. However, the Shannon lads were the ones who took the game by the scruff of the neck, and hit 6 pts without reply, to lead 11 pts to 10 after 14 minutes.
Enter substitute Mickie Daffy who was picked out by Fergal Lynchs brilliant hand-pass and headed for goal, beating Ray Carley in the Wolfe Tones goal to get the Clooney challenge back on track. The Clooney celebrations had hardly died down when the same player fired a speculative ball into the Shannon defence for Fergal Lynch to find the Tones net once again. Leading 2-10 to 0-11, as the game entered the final quarter, hopes were high that the Clooney lads would hold out, but back came the Tones to reduce the arrears to a goal as the game enterd injury time. Then, up stepped Daithi O'Connell to latch onto a ball and finish to the net to earn the Shannon lads a draw.
The replay will take place next Sunday, with supporters of both sides looking forward to more of the same from their teams.
Final score was Clooney/Quin 2-11 Wolfe Tones 1-14
