The Senior hurlers went down 2-16 to 1-11 to Wolfe Tones in the Senior B Hurling Final Replay.........
The story might have finished very differently, however, if Clooney were fortunate enough to have taken either or both of the excellent goal opportunities that fell to them early in the game. The first one came with the game scoreless, while the second at a time when the Tones had a point on the scoreboard. Indeed it can be said that the Tones goal led a charmed life for the first few minutes, such were the opportunities that fell Clooneys way. At the end of the day, it was these missed opportunities plus Wolfe Tones availing of the two goal opportunities that fell their way that made all the difference.
The Shannon outfit settled much quicker in the replay that the first day and led 1-3 to nil by the time Padraig Ward got the Clooney lads off the mark.Brian Shally with two points, one a free, and Pa Reynolds added further points by half-time, but significantly, the Tones had doubled their tally and led 2-6 to 0-4 at the break.
The Clooney/Quin players needed to up their efforts and scoring rate for the second half, and to their credit, they did just that. However, Wolfe Tones were always capable of picking off scores when needed which knocked a lot of momentum from the Clooney/Quin challenge as the scoreboard tightened up.
The 2nd half exploded with a flurry of scores, as both sides reached top form. By the 9th minute of the half, the score stood at 2-10 to 0-9, with Clooney/Quin in need of a goal to ignite their challenge. This they nearly got as Mickie Daffy headed for the Tones goal, but he was hauled down just before he shot. Brian Shally converted the free to leave two
goals between the sides. Declan O'Rourke added a further Tones point before the goal Clooney desperately needed arrived.
Following O'Rourkes point, Clooney 'keeper, damien O'Halloran found Pa Reynolds with a quick puck-out. Pa launched a massive delivery deep into the Tones backline which was brilliantly fielded by Fergal Lynch who quickly fed the on-rushing Daffy at speed. he made no mistake from close range to put the Clooney/Quin lads back in the game on a 2-11 to 1-10 scoreline.
A Shally free reduced the defecit to a goal in the 14th minute which got the spectators going. However, this was Clooneys final score as the Tones responded to the danger magnificently, and, showing the depth of experience they had throughout the team, added a further five points by full-time.
The final scoreline of 2-16 to 1-11 seemed harsh on the Clooney lads.
