A brace of goals from Fergal Lynch and further goals from Trevor Lee and Cillian Duggan set the Clooney-Quin lads on their way to their second win from three starts.
Mind you, it didn't start very well for the away side, as Cillian Fennessy struck for a fine goal for Clonlara, as early as the 2nd minute, the first score of the match. The Clooney lads settled to their task and hit...
four unanswered points from Cillian Duggan, a Cathal Egan free, Padraig Ward and Adrian Fleming from the 4th to the 9th minutes.William Slattery tied up the sides a minute later as the game was witnessing some fine patches of hurling.
Cathal Egan hit a brace of points in the 13th minute, the second following a fine pass from Trevor Lee to edge Clooney two ahead, but Donal Madden from a free and then from play levelled the game at the mid-point of the half, Clonlara 1-3 to Clooneys 0-6.
Egan from a free in the 19th minute put Clooney ahead once more, and he pointed from play four minutes later following a quick Cillian Duggan free to cousin Martin, who fed the Tipperary man to score.A minute later, and the Clooney boys had the ball in the Clonlara net, as Fergal Lynch gained posession before powering through to beat Ger O'Connell from close range.
The visitors continued with their scoring burst, with a brace of frees from Egan in the 26th and 28th minutes. It got better for Clooney a minute later as an Adrian Fleming run and shot was brilliantly turned away by O'Connell but the inrushing Trevor Lee finished to the net. Donal Madden replied for Clonlara from the puck-out, with an Egan free completing the 1st half scoring, Clooney-Quin 2-11 to Clonlara's 1-4.
The home side needed a fast start to the second half, and this is what they got, thanks to a goal and two points from Madden again, the goal from an unstopable 20M free. The game was back on a knife-edge now, the margin having been halved to five points by the 6th minute of the 2nd half.
The Clooney lads needed a response from their players if they were to stay ahead, and the steadying scores came in the form of points from three placed balls. An Egan free in the 8th minute was followed by a long-range strike from another free by Cillian Duggan. From the resulting puck-out, Clonlara 'keeper, Ger O'Connell was adjudged to have left his small square and Egan duly converted the resulting "65". A Padraig Ward point from play pushed the Clooney lead out to 9 points, but the ever-reliable John Conlon pulled a like score back for the Clon lads at the three-quarter point.
Martin Duggan cancelled out this score a minute later, but then Clooney were awarded a penalty, which Fergal Lynch blasted to the net to set Clooney on their way to the win. From here to the final whistle, all scores came from placed balls. Duggan and Madden swapped points in the 18th and 21st minutes, with Egan from another free a minute later taking the score to 3-18 to 2-8. A Nicky O'Connell "65" with 5 minutes left was followed by a fortunate goal from another long-range Cillian Duggan free, as the ball dropped in under the Clonlara cross-bar and into the net. Egan and Duggan completed the scoring to leave the final score at 4-20 to 2-9.
Clooney are at home to Cratloe next in a game that has been brought forward from the Bank Holiday May weekend.
