Way back at the turn of the Millenium in 2000, Clooney-Quin contested their second consecutive Under 12 !A" County Final. Then it was known as the Under 12 Premier Championship. On that evening in Kilkishen, the Clooney-Quin lads were trying to capture the County Title they came so close to a year earlier in the Final which was won by Newmarket.
But back to the 2000 Final. That evening, as the Clooney-Quin lads suffered their second sucessive Final loss, this time to Wolfe Tones who hit 2 goals in injury time to lift the title, Clonlara were contesting, and winning, the Under 12 "B" Championship.
Since then, Clooney-Quin have captured County "A" titles at 15, 16 and Minor, on their way contesting some of the most memorable games played in Underage competition when the opposition was provided by Clonlara.
For their part, since 2000, "Clon" haven't done too badly either!
They got the better of Clooney in an Under 21 "B" Final, before really setting sail, capturing County Minor "A" and Under 21 "A" Titles over the past four years.
Similar to Clooney-Quin capturing the County and Munster Intermediate Club Championship Titles, Clonlara followed suit 12 months later.
And then, Clonlara really found their feet, as they toppled Newmarket in the County Senior Final, taking the Canon Hamilton Trophy down to deep East Clare for the first time since the '20's.
That was 14 months ago. last year, they came within seconds of following up that win with the retention of the Title, but Cratloe struck for a last gasp goal, to deny Clon.
Thus, when Clooney-Quin and Clonlara meet in Shannon at the quarter-final stage, just as they did 12 months ago, anything could happen. On that day, there was little between the sides but a late Clonlara kick got them home safely.
This year, both sides have shown mixed form up to this in the Championship, but this is knock-out now.
A massive effort will be needed by the Clooney-Quin lads if they are to reach the County semi-final. We may be down a number of players due to injury, but the Panel has shown that there is strength in depth available to the mentors.
Lets hope that on Saturday our Lads can hit the heights that they are capable of and emerge victorious from a match that, as happened in the past, can throw up the unexpected when you least expect it!
Up Clooney-Quin!
