The inaugural Abbey Stores U-14 Hurling Tournament held on Saturday, July 19th was an outstanding success on all fronts.................
The participants, Kinvara from Galway, Mullinahone from Tipperary, John Lockes, Callan, in Kilkenny and us as hosts turned in a fantastic days hurling.
The weather finally provided players, mentors and spectators an opportunity to get out and enjoy a warm, dry afternoon to soak up the sun and terrific hurling that was on show.
The day kicked off with a Parade through the village of Quin led by members of the Tulla Pipe Band, with a large crowd flanking the four panels as they made their way up the village. From there, it was off to the GAA Complex and the days action.
The format of the Competition was that all teams would play each other, with the top two teams contesting the "A" Final and the third and fourth sides contesting the "B" Final.
After two rounds of the Competition, John Lockes were in pole position, having secured two wins, with the Clooney/Quin lads facing Mullinahone in the final match, the winner qualifying for the Final against the Kilkenny representatives.
Both Mullinahone and Clooney/Quin served up a brilliant match that swung one way and then the other right to the final whistle. At the end, Mullinahone came out on top in an epic encounter.
In the "A" Final, John Lockes ability to score goals proved decisive, getting the better of their neighbours by 5 points.
Clooney/Quin also showed that they too can score goals, and ran out comfortable winners over Kinvara.
After the games, Fergal Lynch presented medals to the Kinvara and Clooney/Quin players, while Mark O'Halloran from Abbey Stores did the dutiful for the winners, John Lockes and the vanquished Mullinahone.
Matches played, trophies and medals presented, speeches made, it was then time to retreat to the Clubhouse where a Feast awaited a very thirsty and hungry crowd.
Well done to all who made the Tournament such a Success!
