Another very successful U-13 tournament is nearing an end this weekend as 3 of the 4 finals are down for decision.
Due to the inclement weather and the consequent question mark over pitch availability, a final decision on two of the venues is being left as late as possible. Details will appear elsewhere on this web site as soon as they are confirmed.
The first final of the weekend will commemorate the 125th anniversary of the GAA as we head back to the birthplace of Michael Cusack in Carron on Friday night. Here, North Clare rivals, Ruan and St. Breckans will meet to decide the destination of the John O'Brien Trophy in the Cryoclinic Div. 3 Final. The Lisdoonvarna club took this title 2 years ago while Ruan will be looking for their first ever win in the Clooney/Quin Tournament. The match is due to get underway at 7pm. and will be our first floodlit final.
On Saturday morning, the Crusheen/Tubber amalgamation will take on Cratloe in the Kerry Agribusiness Plate Final. It seems like Cratloe's adult teams can do no wrong in 2009, and their U-13s will try to be every bit as successful. The 'Amalgamation' will have other ideas and a good game is expected before we discover who will take home the John O'Brien Shield.
This game will be followed by the meeting of the host club, Clooney/Quin, and Killanena/Feakle in The Bumblebee Embroidery Div. 2 Final. Clooney/Quin will enter the game with a lot of confidence from being unbeaten in this year's competition. They have had very enjoyable training sessions over the last number of weeks under the guidance of Joe O'Loughlin, Damien O'Halloran, Eddie Keane and Pat Leamy. The fruits of these sessions have been evident in the great spirit the boys have displayed in their four matches so far.
Their resolve will be well tested in the final by the East Clare side who have been the form team in this division, having put up big scores against the likes of Clarecastle and Ballyea. Mike Daly's team are going for their third successive Div. 2 title and will be difficult to stop.
After the match the winning captain will be presented with the brand new Gerry Lee Memorial Cup which commemorates a man who epitomized the spirit of the GAA as player, coach and administrator. Born in Tubber where he became a pivotal figure in the local GAA club, it was certainly our gain when Gerry and his family moved to live in Quin. Gerry, a former county senior hurler became actively involved in Clooney/Quin GAA club as hurling coach before going on to serve as Treasurer and Chairman.
Gerry's son, Trevor (fresh from his Alpine Challenge) will make the presentation.
The Abbey Stores Div. 1 Final is postponed until next weekend as the 2nd semi-final was 'rained off' this week. Kilmaley await the winners of the Doora/Barefield v. Smith O'Briens match which is scheduled for this Saturday.
Incidentally, all four trophies are on display in Abbey Stores up until the weekend.
