Our U-16 Hurlers suffered a 1.9 to 1.5 defeat at home to Smith O'Briens/Broadford on Monday evening in Round 1 of the County Under 16 "A" Championship........
It was a titanic struggle between two teams desperate to get their respective championship campaigns off to the perfect start.
Little separated the teams in the 1st half and it was fitting that they went to the break on level terms at 3 points each.
The game turned in the visitors' favour early in the 2nd half when they hit 1.1 in a 3 minute period. Clooney/Quin battled bravely to get back into the game and Niall Hehir closed the margin on 50 mins. when he found the net with a deft touch to a long range Peter Duggan free.
Good defending by the East Clare combination kept the home side at bay in the final minutes and the visitors held out for a 4 point win.
Our boys will return to Hennessey Park on this Monday evening to take on The 'Bridge in Round 2. This match will have a 7.30pm throw-in.
