The clubs involvement in the Under 21 hurling County Championship ended with the defeat of the "C" side on Good Friday.......

There was major disappointed when the clubs Under 21 "A" hurling side suffered a surprise defeat to Cratloe in the 1st Round of the Championship played in Meelick on St Patricks Day. A goal in each half for the Cratloe lads proved too much of a defecit to recover from, as the Clooney lads failed to reach the standard that they have been accustomed to.
Clooney played into the strong breeze in the 1st half, but found themselves behind on a 1-4 to 0-2 scoreline by the mid-point of the half. From here to halftime, it was nip and tuck, the defecit at 5 points at the short whistle.
On the resumption, Clooney hit their best spell of the game, hitting 3 unanswered points to reduce the arrears to 2 points. With the game in the balance, disaster struck the Clooney defence as a long delivery seemed to be lost due to the low sunshine, resulting in the sliothar ending up in the Clooney net. This was a mortal blow to the Clooney/Quin fightback and, try as they might, they couldn't breach a tight Cratloe defence. At the end, the Cratloe lads ran out winners on a 2-13 to 0-14 scoreline.
The Under 21 "C" side, however, registered a victory in their 1st Round game with Newmarket. This game was played in Kilkishen on Saturday, March 15th.
Goals from Daire Hannon and team Captain James Casey set the lads on their way to a 2-2 to 0-6 win in difficult conditions. In the end, Clooney held on to a slender two point lead as Newmarket threw everything into attack late-on, but a stern defensive performance saw the Clooney lads through.
In the Quarter Final they took on a hotly tipped Broadford side in Kilkishen on Good Friday. It is said that goals win games, and this was borne out with the Clooney lads being hit with three early goals which set the Broadford lads on their way to a hard-fought win.
Those early goals, with Clooney having the assistance of the strong wind, were a hammer-blow, but the lads battled on as a now confident Broadford side held sway. By half-time, the Clooney lads were eight points down and, with the wind assistance to come, it looked as though Broadford would rack up a high tally. However, the Clooney lads rallied in that 2nd half and hurled manfully throughout, restricting the Boradford team to a mere 1-2. With the elements against them, scores were hard to come by, but the Clooney lads added 2 points, with a number of goal efforts
being repelled by a now under pressure Broadford defence. At the final whistle, the scoreboard read 5-5 to 0-7 in Broadfords favour, but this didn't tell the story of a tremendously brave 2nd half performance from the Clooney team.
