The Under 16 football team bowed out of the Shield Competition on Monday evening. Here is the Report.........

Having been awarded a place in the semi-final of the U-16 Football Shield, it looked for most of the match on Monday as if Clooney/Quin were going to reap maximum benefit from their good fortune. Undaunted by the task of taking on such a powerful football club as Kilrush, our lads took the game to 'The Shamrocks' from the throw-in at Lissycasey.

An early opportunist goal from Jason Ryan rang the alarm bells in the Kilrush camp, but they failed to handle the relentles, wind assisted, on-slaught from Clooney/Quin in the first half. Peter Duggan and Mark Taylor tormented the Kilrush defence.  Niall Hehir kicked two points - one of which was the best point of the game scored from near the sideline. John Reynolds and also added a minor, before Alan Miller punished Kilrush indiscretions with three pointed frees. This left C/Q leading at the break by 1.6 to 0.4.

As the wind freshened at the backs of the Kilrush men in the 2nd half, Ryan O'Neill was brought to defence where he had an outstanding game. With the best player on the field, Brian McInerney, dominant at full-back, David Barry solid at centre-back and the industrious Brian McEvoy on the wing, Kilrush were limited to 2 points by the 55th minute. In fact we could well have added to our own score during this period as we hit a few narrow wides. With 5 mins to go, Kilrush eventually found a way through for a goal to draw level. This was quickly followed by a point to give them the lead with time running out. Kilrush were flattered by the scoreline when they scored a deflected 2nd goal in injury time and finished up 2.8 to 1.6 winners.

While ending the season on a defeat, there is great credit to these guys for the high standard of football they played. Well done all!
