U-16

The Division II U-16 Ladies Football Final between Kilmurry Ibrickane and Clooney/Quin was played on Sunday at 5.30pm in Lissycasey. The rain stopped just before throw in but a very strong wind was evident until after half time. This caused difficulty for the Clooney forwards who although had several chances went into the dressing room at half time 5 points down, 3-1 to Kilmurry Ib, 1-2 to Clooney/Quin. Whatever was said to the Clooney girls at half time it had an impact as immediately into the second half, they began their comeback, so much so that Kilmurry only scored 2 points throughout all the second half compared with Clooney's tally of 5-2. Final score Kilmurry Ibrickane 3-3; Clooney Quin 6-4.

With only about 10 minutes to go Clooney were down by a goal and it was looking unlikely that they would catch a very strong Kilmurry team. With most of the play for the second half in Clooney's half of the field, that one goal seem elusive, until a fine shot from Laura Costello evened the score. A few minutes later, Clooney took the lead with a point from Siobhan McCarthy. Their next score came from a surprise goal from substitute Emma Deegan, followed very closely by 2 goals from Mary Kate Moloney.

Our U-16's played their 2nd Match of the season on last Thursday March 31st in Clooney against Liscannor, wries Martha Deegan...........................
It was a cold windy evening. In the first half Clooney played with the wind. Like our previous match, the first half saw a very good Clooney Team steam ahead to a 3 -7 to 0-1 lead. Even with this high scoring, some more scores had gone amiss of the target for Clooney during this first half as they were caught in the air with what was a strong wind.
At half Team, Paddy and Brian made some positional changes as it was expected that Liscannor would come back stronger in the 2nd half. They did but as in the previous match Clooney were stronger still and didn't reduce their pace even one notch when it was evident that there was no chance of them being caught. The final score was 5-12 to 0-4. Laura Costelloe, Maria Hehir, Mary Kate Moloney, Hannah O'Brien and Aisling Corbett scored goals while Laura Costello, Maria Hehir, Mary Kate Moloney, Nicole O'Riordan, Siobhan McCarthy, Hannah O'Brien and Aisling Corbett scored the points.
Mary Kate Moloney started off in goals for Clooney, to be swapped with Jessica Leamy in forwards during the first quarter. After half time, Jessica returned to the forwards and Siobhan McCarthy played in goals for the entire second half.
Team:  Mary Kate Moloney, Jennifer Leamy, Kate McCarthy, Cathy Halpin, Gemma McEvoy, Jennifer Costelloe, Michelle Canny, Aisling Corbett, Hannah O'Brien, Nicole O'Riordan, Siobhan McCarthy, Laura Costelloe, Jessica Leamy, Maria Hehir, Lena O'Halloran, Nadine Kellegher, Emma Deegan. Mentors: Brian O'Neill, Paddy McCarthy, Bernie O'Halloran, Martha Deegan.
Next match is Thursday 14th April at 6.30pm in Clooney Hurling Field v Kilmurray Ibrickane.

Friday 18th March saw the start of the U-16 Ladies Football season. In their first match of the year away in Gurteen against Doora-Barefield, a almost full squad was available to play. Playing with the wind in the first half, with most of the play in the Clooney half, Clooney played well against Doora/Barefield and at half time the score was 6 points to 2 points. Several more scores went amiss of the target for Clooney during this first half as they settled into their stride.

At the beginning of the second half and as anticipated, Doora/Barefield came back very strong, and it was then that Clooney played even better. After Doora Barefield scored two goals in quick succession, Clooney came back very strong with a point and a goal from Aisling Corbett and a goal from Maria Hehir. The end score was Clooney/Quin 2-9 to Doora/Barefield 3-3. Michelle Canny had a good game in goals in the first half and Siobhan McCarthy took her place there in the second half with Michelle going into the forwards.

Team:  Michelle Canny (captain), Cathy Halpin, Colette Purcell, Hannah O'Brien, Gemma McEvoy, Kate McCarthy, Jennifer Costelloe, Aisling Corbett, Maria Hehir, Laura Costelloe, Mary Kate Moloney, Nicole O'Riordan, Lena O'Halloran, Siobhan McCarthy, Jennifer Leamy, Cora O'Grady, Jessica Leamy, Meave Clune, Niamh O'Donnell, Aoibheann Duggan, Aine Nash, Alice O'Donnell.
