15 January 2009
In a packed Parochial Hall on Saturday night last, Clooney/Quin held a medal presentation evening for all the victorious teams of the parish in 2008.
With 8 team trophies and 10 trophies in all garnered there was certainly something to celebrate.
Now add in the All-Ireland Junior Camogie Cup and Div.2 League Cup brought back to the village by Deirdre Murphy and Amy Colleran and it is clear that this was a very special evening in Quin village........
The evening kicked off with a few tunes from our talented Scor na nOg music group. When Co. PRO and Clare FM sports commentator Syl O'Connor took the mike and introduced the 'Parade of Champions' the mood was electric and a few joyous tears were shed. Tulla Piper (and a regular performer in the village over the last 6 months) Gerry O'Loughlin led the trophy bearers up through the hall to rapturous applause.
Our dynamic duo on visuals for the night were Liam Kitson and Pat Ryan and what a show they put on! We re-lived the glorious moments of the Green and Red Brigades from 2008 on large screen and they looked even better!
Celebrities on stage for the evening to present the medals were Clooney/Quin's Fergal Lynch and Davy Fitzgerald and Niall Gilligan from Sixmilebridge. Davy addressed the gathering with his characteristic sincerity as he encouraged all the youth to stay with the GAA and stressed the importance of the involvement of parents.
Each player was presented with his/her medal. Photos were taken. What a night! And then when we thought it was over ... there was more!
As we watched replays of Clare Camogie's All-Ireland triumph, Deirdre and Aimee were invited on stage to each accept a presentation from Marie Kennedy on behalf of Clooney/Quin Camogie Club. They received a standing and prolonged ovation. This was a gesture to reflect how proud we are of their great contribution to Clare camogie and the pride they bring to the parish.
Deirdre's achievement was particularly significant as she followed in the footsteps of Amby Power to became the second person from the club to captain a Clare team to an All-Ireland title.
To finish off a special night in the village, a teenage disco followed.
