Last weekend Quin Clooney camogie took part in the community games camogie competition. The team had a difficult draw and needed to play a preliminary round before quarter finals.
Quin Clooney were drawn against Clarecastle-Ballyea in the preliminary round and both parties agreed to play this on the Friday evening so as that there would be less games on the Saturday.
Quin Clooney travelled to Clarecastle for the game and all who attended were in for an exciting evening.  The game was to be 15 minutes a half and they were 12 aside.  Quin CLooney started very well and were in front at the half time whistle with the score 1-2 to nil. Emily Costello got a point and Emma Considine got 1-1.  Clarecastle-Ballyea fought back for the second half and despite the best efforts of Molly Slattery in goal they recorded a goal and a quickly point from the restart. The game went from end to end and was level with two minutes remaining (  1-5 to 2-2 ) with scores from Clionadh Ryan and Emma Considine for Quin Clooney.  On the last attack of the game Emma Considine made a 30 yard run with the ball and blasted it past the Clarecastle/Ballyea goalie. And that was not the end as after a quick puck out was picked up by Emma O’Donoghue of Clarecastle and she levelled the game.
Extra time was needed to settle this tie and so five minutes a side of extra time followed. Neither side managing to score in extra time.  Indeed it was the home side that had the better of the scoring chances in the extra time and some heroic saves from Molly Slattery kept Quin Clooney in the game.
Under the rule of Community games penalties were required to award a winner. Five penalty takers were lined up  with Emma Considine in goal for Quin Clooney and Emma O’Donoghue for Clarecastle/Ballyea.  Niamh Mcgee was first up for Quin CLooney and with a sweetly struck penalty gave the goalie no chance.  This was the only score in penalties as Emma Considine saved all Clarecaslte/Ballyea penalties and Emily Costello, Clionadh Ryan registering points that didn’t count in the scoring and Emma Considine’s penalty was saved.  Lucy Cassidy did not need to take hers as Quin Clooney were ahead 1-0 after all five of Clarecastle’s penalties been taken.
It was a very exciting evening.

Quin Clooney were out the following morning and while the girls put in a great performance against Doora Barefield and fell just short on a 2 points to 2 goals scoreline.  The girls worked hard against a physically stronger Doora Barefield who just had the upper hand.

The girls were to be very proud of themselves and as it turned out Doora Barefield won Gold in the competition with Quin Clooney being the closest to them on the score sheet.
